FAQs | Caravans Sydney
Vehicles vary in terms of the weight they can safely carry, and overloading a vehicle with a caravan increases the risk of accidents. Excess weight can also cause damage to both the vehicle and the caravan. Therefore, it is crucial to understand your vehicle’s Gross Combined Mass (GCM).
GCM refers to the maximum weight your car and caravan can collectively weigh. While some might assume GCM is simply the sum of your vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM)—the vehicle’s maximum weight—and its towing capacity, this isn’t always accurate. Sometimes, the towing capacity provided is impractical, so choosing a caravan well within your vehicle’s towing capacity is safer, allowing extra weight for the caravan’s ball weight and your vehicle’s TARE and payload.
Ball weight is the force exerted by the caravan on the tow ball (where it attaches to the car). Your vehicle's TARE weight is its weight when empty, including all fluids and 10 litres of fuel. The payload refers to the weight of passengers, gear, and the caravan's ball weight.
In Australia, the unbraked towing capacity is always limited to 750kg, while the braked towing capacity can range from 2300kg to 3500kg, depending on the vehicle's engine and chassis. The caravan's Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM) must never exceed the vehicle’s towing capacity. ATM is the total weight of a fully loaded caravan, including all items such as water, fuel, food, and personal belongings.
Start by considering who will be using the caravan. Are you travelling alone, as a couple, or with family, including children or teens? This will guide your decision on size, layout, features, and sleeping arrangements. Do you need a Queen-size bed, single beds, or bunk beds? How many beds will you need, and how should they be arranged (widthways or lengthways)? Also, consider the space you want for your kitchenette and dining area and whether a separate toilet and ensuite are necessary.
The typical size for an Australian touring caravan is between 19 and 21 feet long, which is roughly six metres from wall to wall. However, caravans can range from just over three metres to nearly eight. Off-road caravans tend to be slightly shorter, around 600mm, to improve manoeuvrability for more rugged terrains.
