That way, you've got loads of time to explore each spot, hit the beaches, enjoy a few nature walks, and check out the local cafes and shops without rushing. Day 1 - Tranquil Treks & Leisurely Lunching
Brisbane Water National Park
ROUTE: Sydney to Gosford
DISTANCE: ~85KM
DRIVING TIME: ~1 hour (direct)
Leaving Sydney and heading north, make a stop at Bulgandry to view the Aboriginal rock engravings in the Brisbane Water National Park. This spot is ideal for those after a quieter start to their journey, and is perfect for hiking and photography. Ideal inspiration for the days ahead!
Take a detour to the Australian Reptile Park, where you can get up close to giant reptiles like crocodiles and giant pythons, and watch wildlife shows showcasing the park's diverse Australian wildlife.
Continuing north, you'll pass through Gosford, one of the largest urban centres on the Central Coast. The Gosford Waterfront area has been revitalised in recent years—enjoy a stroll along the scenic Brisbane Waterway, then stop in at the Gosford Sailing Club for a bistro-lunch-with-a-view.
Day 2 - Beach Action & Pelican Performances

DISTANCE: ~32KM
DRIVING TIME: ~30 minutes (direct)
The next morning, prepare for some aquatic action. Twenty minutes from Gosford is Terrigal Beach for a surf or bodyboarding on gentle waves, or wander along the iconic boardwalk to the scenic rock platform. Next up is Wamberal Beach, where you can have another splash, explore Wamberal Lagoon, and visit the Wamberal Beach Rock Pool, or take in the views from the cliff top walking tracks. Bateau Bay Beach is another nearby popular spot; enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the local cafes.
Last on today's list is The Entrance. Visit the local markets, explore the Entrance Ocean Baths, and don't miss Pelican Time, the famous pelican feeding at 3:30 PM daily.
Day 3 - Peaceful Picnics & Fishing Ops
ROUTE: The Entrance to Budgewoi
DISTANCE: ~17KM
DRIVING TIME: ~16 minutes (direct)
From The Entrance, make your way to Tuggerah Lake with its kayaking and fishing opportunities. Walk along the scenic lakefront, or pack a picnic and relax at Tuggerah Reserve. Norah Head is a 20-minute drive away, with the historic Norah Head Lighthouse offering lovely coastal views. Then finish your Central Coast road trip at Budgewoi with a fish or kayak on Budgewoi Lake.

Keen to continue north along the coast? Extend your journey to Newcastle! Along the way, stop at Lake Macquarie for watersports galore, including kayaking, fishing, jet skiing and windsurfing. Wander the Watagan Mountains — there are lots of walking tracks here for all ages, including a stroll to the Heaton Lookout for breathtaking views over the Watagan Mountains and the Central Coast.
Heading back to Sydney, there are also lots of highlights further inland to explore, including Somersby Falls — a multi-tiered waterfall in Bouddi National Park, and Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park.
